Why is the theory of relativity important? — Part 3: Why is the theory of relativity important? — Part 3: Limits, Trade-offs, and Open Questions

Section 1 of 6

What Limits Exist?

What are the fundamental constraints or boundaries on the theory of relativity? One key limit is that as you approach the speed of light, strange things happen. Imagine you're on a super-fast spaceship. The faster you go, you find that time might slow down for you compared to someone standing still! This means there's a maximum speed in the universe – nothing can go faster than light.

Another limit is the size of objects. Relativity perfectly explains the motion of big objects like planets and stars but struggles with tiny things like atoms.

🤔Predict

Predict: What happens if scientists try to make objects travel faster than light? What might they have to rethink?
