Why do Mentos make soda fizz? โ€” Part 3: Why do Mentos make soda fizz? โ€” Part 3: Limits, Trade-offs, and Open Questions

Section 1 of 6

What Limits Exist?

What are the limits when it comes to mixing Mentos and soda? Well, one big limit is the amount of carbon dioxide gas that soda contains. This gas is what makes soda fizzy, but there's only so much of it in each bottle. Once it's all released, the fizzing stops. Another limit is the size and shape of the Mentos itself โ€” they're designed with tiny bumps that increase the fizzing action. But not every candy will work this way. Temperature is also important; warmer soda tends to fizz more because gases escape from it more easily.
