How trains stay safely on their tracks — Part 3: How trains stay safely on their tracks — Part 3: Limits, Trade-offs, and Open Questions

Section 1 of 6

What Limits Exist?

How do trains stay securely on the tracks while moving fast? Trains face limits due to friction, track alignment, and weight. Friction between the wheels and the rails keeps trains from slipping off, but too much can also wear out parts. The wheels must fit snugly on the tracks, not too loose but not too tight. The train's weight presses it down, giving stability but also needing strong tracks.

🧠 Pause & Think: How do you think train speed affects its grip on the tracks? ⚖️ Choose: Would you pick: A. Heavier trains for better stability B. Lighter trains for faster speed Why?
