How do basketball players jump so high? — Part 3: How do basketball players jump so high? — Part 3: Limits, Trade-offs, and Open Questions

Section 1 of 6

What Limits Exist?

Have you ever wondered why there are only so many great basketball jumpers? One big limit is human muscles. While our muscles can get stronger, they can only get so strong before they reach their limit. Think of muscles like rubber bands—there's only so far they can stretch before they snap. Another limit is gravity, the force that pulls us down to Earth. No matter how high you jump, gravity will always bring you back down. There are also physical limits like joint flexibility that determine how much force your legs can generate to propel you upward. Sometimes, people's bodies just aren't built in a way that makes jumping easy. Even with all the right training, nutrition, and practice, some athletes won't become high-jumpers because of these limitations. Understanding these limits helps athletes train more effectively, knowing what is possible and what might be out of reach.
