How soccer players run fast and long โ€” Part 3: How soccer players run fast and long โ€” Part 3: Limits, Trade-offs, and Open Questions

What Limits Exist?

Have you ever wondered why even the fittest soccer players get tired after a while? One limit is the human body's capacity to store and use energy. Just like a battery that runs out, our muscles have a maximum amount of energy they can hold and use before needing to recharge. On top of that, our body also needs oxygen to turn food into energy and keep muscles working. If you breathe faster and deeper while running, that's your body trying to get more oxygen. Another limit is muscle fatigue. The longer muscles work, the more they tire out, just like how you might feel after playing outside all day. Finally, avoiding injury is a limit. Running too hard or too long without resting can hurt muscles. Understanding these limits shows us why training and resting are important for players.
