The journey of Pangaea: drifting continents — Part 3: The journey of Pangaea: drifting continents — Part 3: Limits, Trade-offs, and Open Questions

Section 1 of 6

What Limits Exist?

Imagine trying to make a giant jigsaw puzzle fit together, but nature keeps changing the shapes of the pieces! What are the fundamental constraints or boundaries when it comes to continents and their movement? One key limit is the Earth's crust, which is broken into several large pieces called tectonic plates. These plates float on a softer layer beneath them and move very slowly, but they can't go just anywhere—they're limited by the forces within the Earth and by each other. Just like cars stuck in traffic, plates can only move if there's space and a push in the right direction. While they might want to spread out, they're held back by mountains, oceans, and other plates nearby. This creates boundaries where they meet, and not all directions are possible for movement. Another limit is time—it takes millions of years for continents to drift into new positions. So, while the plates contain an urge to move, they do it at their own slow pace, just like watching grass grow!
