The journey of Pangaea: drifting continents — Part 2: The journey of Pangaea: drifting continents — Part 2: How It Works

Section 1 of 6

What Parts Work Together?

Have you ever wondered what parts of the Earth work together to move continents? The main parts involved in this big system are the Earth's plates, mantle, and core. Think of the Earth's surface as a giant jigsaw puzzle made of many large and small puzzle pieces called tectonic plates. These plates float on a soft layer underneath called the mantle. The Earth's core, which is very hot, causes the mantle to slowly move. This movement of the mantle below acts like a conveyor belt that helps the plates on top move. Just like how a toy boat floats because of the water beneath it, the continents move because of the shifting mantle below them. The interactions between these parts—plates, mantle, and core—create forces that push and pull in different directions, causing continents to drift over time. All these parts depend on one another to make the system of moving continents work.
