What is the bubonic plague? — Part 3: What is the bubonic plague? — Part 3: Limits, Trade-offs, and Open Questions

Section 1 of 6

What Limits Exist?

What are the fundamental constraints or boundaries on this topic? The bubonic plague was a disease that spread quickly and caused many people to become very sick. One key limit was how much people knew about germs and how sicknesses spread. At that time, scientists and doctors did not yet understand that tiny germs caused the disease. This made it really hard to stop because people didn't know what was making them sick. Another limit was the technology available at the time. Today, we have advanced medicines and tools to help fight diseases, but back then, these didn't exist. Imagine trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle without knowing what the finished picture should look like—that's similar to figuring out how to stop the plague back then. Furthermore, communication was much slower, so warning others and sharing useful information took a long time. All these limits meant the plague could spread quickly, and stopping it was a huge challenge.
