How crude oil becomes car fuel — Part 2: How crude oil becomes car fuel — Part 2: How It Works

Section 1 of 6

What Parts Work Together?

How do different parts of an oil refinery work together to turn crude oil into car fuel? The process begins with crude oil, a thick, dark liquid found deep underground. The first stop for crude oil in a refinery is the distillation tower. Imagine it as a giant sorting machine. Here, crude oil is heated, and as it rises through the tower, it is separated into different components based on how heavy or light they are. These components then move into various parts of the refinery. Heavy parts might be turned into asphalt while the lighter parts become gasoline, diesel, and other fuels. In this way, the parts of the refinery work as a team to transform crude oil into useful products. This teamwork is crucial; if one part of the system doesn’t work, the whole process can slow down or stop.
