How cars move: Exploring combustion engines — Part 3: How cars move: Exploring combustion engines — Part 3: Limits, Trade-offs, and Open Questions

Section 1 of 6

What Limits Exist?

Cars with combustion engines have some limits. What are those limits? Combustion engines can only run as long as they have fuel. Gasoline, the fuel they need, comes from oil, which is a natural resource found deep in the earth. Since there is a limited amount of oil, we can run out if we use too much. It’s like having a big bag of candy that never gets refilled. Once you finish the bag, there’s no more candy unless you find another one! Also, combustion engines can pollute the air. They release gases that can make the air dirty and hard to breathe. These engines also make a lot of noise, which can be annoying. All these things create limits on how much and how well we can use combustion engines. Understanding these boundaries helps us think about how we can improve or replace them in the future.
