How MRI Machines Peek Inside the Body — Part 2: How MRI Machines Peek Inside the Body — Part 2: How It Works

Section 1 of 6

What Parts Work Together?

Have you ever wondered how MRI machines can see inside your body? Well, it all starts with several important parts working together. The main parts of an MRI machine include a large magnet, radio waves, and a computer. The big magnet is like a giant invisible hand that helps align particles in your body in a certain way. These particles are called hydrogen atoms because that's what they're made of. Once they're aligned, radio waves come into play. They are like tiny nudges that move the hydrogen atoms just a bit. Then, when the radio waves stop, the hydrogen atoms go back to where they were, releasing signals. These signals are picked up by the machine. Finally, the computer steps in to read these signals and turns them into pictures. Just like a team of players in a game, each part of the MRI machine has its role to get a clear image of what's happening inside the body.
